“Through my painting, I love to express my passion for nature in an exaggerated
style by enhancing what I see. The fluidity and vibrancy of watercolor help me to
achieve that goal. Much of my inspiration comes from the seasonal changes of the
Midwest, where I reside in the summer and fall, and from the spectacular light and
colors of the Desert Southwest, where I spend the winter months. My desire as an
artist is to bring my viewer to a higher level of appreciation of the subject matter
I am portraying.”
Joyce has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
She has continued to nourish her talent for art with studies and workshops with
nationally recognized watercolor artists, including Cheng Khee Chee, Frank Webb,
John Salminen, Thomas Trausch and Eric Weigardt.
Her interest in art began as a child and although Joyce was an oil painter for many
years, she has found the medium of watercolor to be fascinating and exciting, and
at the same time very challenging. Joyce’s subject matter consists of whatever moves
her at the moment. It can be anything from a desert in bloom, a blaze of fall leaves,
the grandeur of the mountains, to the simplicity of a single cactus flower.
Joyce holds membership in the Transparent Watercolor Society of America, the Southern
Arizona Watercolor Guild, of which she is a Signature Member, the Southern Arizona
Arts Guild, and is one of seven women in the Woodstock Group, with whom she exhibits
in the Chicago area in the summer months. In Arizona, she had been juried into,
and has exhibited in shows at the Desert Museum, Toscana Gallery, Blue Raven Gallery
and through the Southern Arizona Arts & Cultural Alliance. She has received numerous
awards and had a painting juried into the Empire Ranch Western Art Show & Sale for
2010. In Illinois, she has participated in the juried exhibition, Real People, which
spotlights the work of figurative artists from across the country.
